Hello, my fellow Union Sisters and Brothers, my name is James Miller, and I have been involved with Union advocacy for almost 30 years. I started as a steward at the New Orleans P&DC. I have held several positions in my journey. These positions include Steward, Chief Steward, Assistance Maintenance Craft Director N.O., Louisiana State Maintenance Craft Director, Columbus Local Vice President, Arbitration Advocate, and a host of committee assignments. My current USPS position requires me to travel frequently, so I have moved to the background somewhat. I am, however, still 100 percent in the fight for our right to work, take care of our families and retire with dignity. I freely give the benefit of my experience and training to Maintenance stewards, and they have exceeded my expectations. Every Steward that has my personal phone number can count on me answering their call or getting a call back. They have my full support, and I encourage you to give them yours.
When I first came to Columbus P&DC, I was discouraged at how much management was allowed to violate the contract unimpeded. There were several blatant violations that had become normal operation procedure. Employees’ lives were being disrupted unnecessarily in many cases. The maintenance Craft has made great progress in providing members with effective and efficient representation. There have been positive changes in the Maintenance Craft.
So, when I hear Union officials tout cooperation, and accommodation with a management team that will not cooperate or accommodate us, I am concerned. A large portion of Management will only do what is best for them and their desire to advance, or whatever their boss tells them to do; right or wrong. To some of them employees are only tools to build their 990s, maximize bonuses or get a promotion.
The Union understands that behind every grievance number is a person who deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. People with families that depend on them. People with hopes and dreams just like them. I have watched Xaviare Reed, Tina Chapman, Cameron Taylor and team put Maintenance in the right direction. I believe that Xaviare Reed and the team can do the same for the APWU Columbus Local.
In Solidarity,
James Miller
